Ned, I enjoyed this immensely. It is a thoughtful presentation very insightful. I hope more people read it, learn it, and live it.

I don't recall the last time I was reading a book that I literally could not put down until completing it, until I got "When Gulls Fly Low". This work is so well written, with a story that will have you turning each page, eager to see what the characters will experience next. The ending I expect will have you wiping tears of joy from your eyes as a result of it's beauty, as I did mine. A treasure to read and re-read.

Agree right down the line. Did you read the preface from my first Internet book in 1993, where I talk about the real driving force behind it? Somehow I saw it surprisingly clearly. I haven't copied it to the blog yet, but it is on the site here.

Ultimately, though, I think it is the combination of ingredients present in Twitter that ignites what we are talking about and experiencing--the immediacy, anonymity, intimacy, and interactivity, all in superposition to one another and seamlessly bound.

I'm sure not everyone benefits from it fully, and even fewer are able to see the subtletis as we do, but that doesn't mean it doesn't work for them--just differently and perhaps with a lesser impact.

And the growth: I read yesterday that the user-ship grew 1300% in February if I recall correctly. That's astounding! And it is proof positive that, at least in our realities, Twitter is spot on just what the doctor ordered. Long may she wave. :)

yes, that is a big part of it, very in the moment, and I find it esp helpful as I pull together my STAND for the world, as I tweeting/thinking/tweeting/responding, I am forced to find a way to be clear and brief, and I do think the back and forth helps with building stronger bonds

such depth of human development in this post all about the very real human need for human socialization and sense of belonging.

I sure hope you didn't have to make the comparison for me. Haven't gone back and checked, though. :)

I'm amazed that you have been in search of your twibe, too. I came to the realization that I just didn't have anything else to do in my life until I found them and a way for us to interact. That was 12 years ago. Everything else in my life since then has been what was necessary to stay on that path. And Twitter is absolutely the first thing that has gone past the hand-holding stage. So when you say something so similar, and others I'm sure will, that is part of the magic.

One thing that really got my attention lately was the immediacy of the interaction. It happens in real time, or close to it. There is an intimacy about that you don't get with email. Also, being able to switch from public to private and back in a heartbeat is a factor somehow. You think?
